Ms. Shawntel Collins

As I think about leadership, one quote sticks out to me, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader”. To me, this quote means that a leader needs to talk the talk and walk the walk. As I have grown as a leader in multiple facets of my life, I continue to try honest, humble, and respectful to those around me. I try to lead honestly by not only communicating transparently with those around me but by also being honest with myself. Learning never stops. We can always learn from the past (the good, the bad, and the ugly), to make more effective and positive decisions in the future. My view of honesty also ties into humility. I am not afraid to say “I don’t know” or “I need help” because I am not afraid to get down and dirty and learn alongside everyone else. This has instilled trust and respect in my team. Last but not least, respect. As a leader, I try to treat others the way I want to be treated. I start this by appreciating the big and small things my team does, as well as getting down and dirty with them, by doing all the jobs that I oversee. To truly understand what it means to do something, we need to do it. I cannot effectively guide, develop and mentor my team without fully understanding what my team is experiencing.
