Kendria Donaldson

Lieutenant

Milwaukee Fire Department

My leadership philosophy is grounded in situational leadership—knowing how to adjust my approach based on the environment, the stakes, and the needs of my crew. As an officer in the fire service, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t one-size-fits-all. On the fireground, I take on an authoritarian style. In high-stress, time-critical situations, there’s no room for debate—quick, clear decisions must be made with limited information and full accountability. However, once we return to the firehouse, I shift into more of a servant and transformational leadership role.

That’s where trust is built. I make it a priority to get to know my crew—understanding their strengths, weaknesses, and long-term goals. I believe in challenging them in a controlled, supportive environment so they can grow both personally and professionally. My goal is to develop well-rounded firefighters, not just skilled technicians. I’ve learned firsthand that when someone feels valued and supported, they will give their best to the team.

The Yvorra Leadership Development Foundation’s mission—“Through effective management and leadership, the individual can make a difference in the fire and emergency medical services”—aligns perfectly with my own.
