Jeffrey Hennessy

Coordinator, Hazardous Materials/WMD Training

Chicago Fire Department Chicago, Illinois

My leadership philosophy began the day I became a firefighter. Early in my career, I realized that the leaders I admired most were not the ones shouting the loudest orders. I respected the leaders who were with us, side by side, helping me accomplish my goals while still finding ways to challenge me to strive and push harder. Those leaders practiced servant leadership, and that leadership continues to shape my approach to leadership today.

Within the training academy, I strive to incorporate a servant leadership style into my day-to-day actions. Whether it is pausing to guide a stumbling candidate through a drill to help gain their confidence, or staying back after hours to ensure my staff have what they need. I view leadership as a service. By serving others, I build trust with the candidates and the firefighters and officers that work within my division. Showing them I care about their needs, but will do everything I can to challenge them to excel and succeed.

On the fireground, the same philosophy has taught me that the most effective leader is one who can build a team that works together effectively. Ensuring that everyone understands the task at hand and has the necessary skills and abilities to complete the job. Whether through steady encouragement or extra time working to polish a skill, everyone has the tools required.
