When the Yvorra Leadership Development Foundation (YLD) recognizes emerging leaders, one of the goals is to support individuals who will go on to make a lasting impact in their communities. A recent accomplishment by 2024 scholarship recipient Kendra (Loney) Taylor demonstrates exactly why she was selected.

Taylor, Public Information Officer and Director of Community Engagement for the Nashville Fire Department, recently announced that the department’s BLAZE Mentoring Program awarded $28,000 in scholarships to 28 graduating seniors across Metro Nashville Public Schools and Middle Tennessee. The scholarships were made possible through partnerships with the Nashville Predators Foundation and AT&T.

Founded by Taylor, the BLAZE Mentoring Program focuses on exposing students to career opportunities, encouraging positive decision-making, and building meaningful relationships with young people beyond the classroom. Since launching its scholarship initiative, the program has awarded a cumulative $58,000 to students who demonstrate leadership, perseverance, community involvement and a commitment to higher education.

In announcing this year’s recipients, Taylor reflected on the program’s growth.

“Five years ago, we simply wanted to create opportunities for students who deserved to be seen, celebrated, and supported,” Taylor said. “To now see 28 students receiving scholarships in a single year is incredibly meaningful.”

Taylor’s commitment to mentoring and leadership development was a significant factor in her selection as a recipient of the Chief James G. Yvorra Scholarship for Fire and Emergency Services Responders in 2024. At the time of her award, YLD President Michael Hildebrand noted Taylor’s dedication to expanding educational opportunities and strengthening the long-term impact of the BLAZE Mentoring Program.

Today, that vision continues to become a reality.

The Yvorra Leadership Development Foundation is proud to recognize leaders like Taylor who not only excel in their profession but also invest their time and talents in developing the next generation. Through mentoring, education and community engagement, she continues to embody the leadership principles that Chief James G. Yvorra championed throughout his career.

“Kendra’s continued success is a perfect example of why YLD invests in emerging leaders,” said Hildebrand. “Her work is creating opportunities for young people today while building stronger communities for tomorrow.”

Congratulations to Kendra Taylor and the entire BLAZE Mentoring Program team on another successful year of making a difference in the lives of students throughout Middle Tennessee.
