Q: Who can apply for an award or scholarship?

A: The award and scholarship program is open to career and volunteer members of Emergency Services organizations such as Fire & Rescue Departments, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Management Agencies, Homeland Security, and active duty, Reserve and National Guard military members who have an emergency preparedness and response job description e.g. firefighter, medic, disaster preparedness, etc. Applicants must be active members of the emergency services and must be a citizen of the United States.

Q: Are family members of active emergency services members eligible for an award or scholarship?

A: No. Only active career or volunteer members of the emergency services are eligible.

Q: Do I need three letters of recommendation?

A: Yes. You may submit an award and scholarship application at any time, however, all three letters of recommendation must be submitted prior to the October 30th deadline in order for your completed application to go forward to the awards committee for evaluation. Incomplete applications will not be submitted for consideration.

Q: How many awards are issued per year?

A: Traditionally, YLD has given three awards away per year.

Q: What is the value of the awards?

A: The Board of Directors establishes a budget for awards and scholarships each year. Individual awards for scholarships have averaged $2,500; however, applications for a leadership development related project may be larger.

Q: Can individuals or groups apply for an award rather than as an individual scholarship?

A: Yes. A group or an individual may submit an application for an emergency services leadership development related project as long as the project is related to the emergency services. Examples may include leadership related research, developing a leadership conference, or leadership training materials.

Q: How are applicants selected?

A: YLD’s Board of Director’s manages the Foundation and establishes an annual budget for awards. An independent Scholarship and Awards Committee evaluates each application and selects the successful applicants. Historically three individuals are selected for scholarships. Groups are awarded on a case-by-case basis based on the annual budget and the merit of their proposal. No member of the Board of Directors serves on the Scholarship and Awards Committee and Board members have no influence concerning who is selected for an award. The Chairman of the Scholarship and Awards Committee serves as a non-voting member on the Board of Directors and acts as a liaison to the committee.

 

Q: Will I be notified if my application is successful or unsuccessful?

A: Yes. Successful applicants are notified by telephone and unsuccessful applicants are notified by mail or e-mail.

Q: If I have received an award in the past, can I apply again in the future?

A: Yes. In our history, YLD has had successful applicants who have received multiple awards.

Q: If my application is unsuccessful, can I apply again?

A: Yes. We have had applicants apply a second time in the following year that were successfully funded.

Q: Can I apply for an award if I am not a U.S. citizen.

A: No. All applicants must be active or volunteer members of the emergency services and must be a citizen of the United States.

Q: Can active duty military serving overseas submit an application?

A: Yes. Any active duty member of the U.S. military, Reserves or National Guard currently serving in an emergency services related position may apply regardless of the duty station location.

Q: Is my donation tax deductible?

A: Yes. The Foundation operates under section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code and as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) and 509(a) of the Code. In compliance with Federal requirements, YLD prepares annual financial reports and submits them to the IRS. All financial reports are submitted to a certified public accountant for third party review and are a matter of public record.

Q: Do Yvorra Leadership Development Board of Directors or Scholarship and Awards Committee members receive financial compensation for their services?

A: No. All of our Board and Committee members proudly volunteer their time in the spirit of community service and do not receive financial reimbursement for time, travel or expenses.

Q: How often does the Board of Directors meet?

A: Annually and sometimes semi-annually based on need and workload. The Spring meeting is typically dedicated to planning and the Fall meeting is dedicated to finance and management of the Foundation.
